Bailey-Matthews
Shell Museum (239/395-2233) - This unique museum exhibits nearly one-third
of the world's total seashell specimens. Admission $5 for adults,
$3 for children ages 8-16, and children under age 8 are free.
Captiva History House (239/472-5111) - This 1920's building was a
worker's cottage on the C.W. Chadwick coconut and Key lime plantation.
In addition to the historic photos and momentos, an impersonator/historian
will sometimes drop in to tell stories of the "olden days."
Captiva Public Library (239/472-2133) - Offers all standard library
services. |

Chapel
by the Sea (239/472-1646) - A tiny chapel, dated 1901, was, for many
years, Captiva Island's one-room schoolhouse. Sunday services are
held November through April. Every Christmas Eve, a caroling and candlelight
ceremony is held.
C.R.O.W. (Care and Rehabilitation of Wildlife 239/472-3644) - C.R.O.W.
is a non-profit veterinary hospital dedicated to the rehabilitation
and return to the wild of ill, injured, and orphaned wildlife. For
a small donation of $3, tours are available Mon-Fri at 11:00 a.m.
as well as Sunday at 1:00 p.m. (Nov-April only). |
J.N. "Ding" Darling
National Wildlife Refuge (239/472-1100) - This 6000-acre sanctuary
includes an observation tower, hiking, biking, canoe trails, and visitor
center. Closed Fridays, the refuge is every other day open Sat-Thurs
9:00 a.m. to sunset, unless otherwise specified. Admission is $5 for
cars and $1 to bike and hike.
Sanibel-Captiva
Conservation Foundation (S.C.C.F. 239/472-2329) - This non-profit
organization is dedicated to preserving island natural resources.
An excellent orientation for new residents, S.C.C.F. offers walking
trails, exhibits, a marine "touch tank," a native plant nursery, butterfly
house, nature store, hikes, am island boat tour and more. Admission
is $2 for visitors 12 and over. |
Sanibel Community Center (239/472-2155) - A special event forum. Call
for details.
Sanibel Historical Village and Museum (239/472-4648) - The name says
it all! $1 donation requested of adult visitors.
Sanibel Lighthouse (Point Ybel Light) - Located at the tip of the
east-end of Sanibel, this lighthouse dates back to 1884 and is listed
on the National Register of Historic Places.
Sanibel Public Library (239/472-2483) - Among standard library services,
there is also a public meeting room available. |
